Homme d'affaires en réflexion

Organizations constantly invest in projects. Marketing initiatives, technological transformation, artificial intelligence. The intention is clear: improve performance. Yet manystrategic investments end up costing more than they generate.

The issue is not the project itself. It is what investing in a project reveals about the organization.

Investing in a Project Acts as a Revealer

Investing in a project exposes the real structure of an organization. If roles are unclear, confusion increases. If responsibilities are not clearly assumed, momentum slows. If decision-making lacks clarity, energy becomes scattered. The project creates nothing new. It simply reveals what was already fragile.

Investing in a project without clarifying structure quickly turns a strategic investment into a cost.

Example: An AI Project

An AI project is a clear example. 2 people reviewing project reports

AI tools are powerful. But how they are used depends entirely on the people behind them. Some use AI to quickly synthesize information. Others need depth and detail. Otherstest, adjust, and refine until they reach precise results. Same tool. Different ways of operating.

When roles align with how people naturally function, AI becomes a lever. When one single method is imposed, friction appears. The tool is not the issue. The lack of human alignment is.

AI does not fix organizational misalignment. It amplifies it.

The Blind Spot: Expertise

Another factor can turn investing in a project into a cost: the expertise selected. Today, the market is saturated and titles are everywhere. But a title does not guaranteeresults.

Before hiring an expert, organizations must clarify what needs to be structured internally and validate the depth of the proposed strategic support.

I discuss this in Episode 9 of the S.O.S. Business podcast — Marketing: From “It Costs” to “It Pays” — with Penny Lamarre. We explore practical criteria to distinguish solid strategic guidance from improvised execution and how to protect a marketing investment from becoming wasted spending. Investing in a project requires validating expertise as carefully as structure.

Investing with Clarity

Strategic investment always begins in the same place: people and structure.
A project can accelerate an aligned organization. It weighs down a misaligned one. The difference is not in the tool, but in coherence.
Investing in a project without alignment turns investment into expense.
