It is not easy for anyone to change an habit, good or bad. Why ? Different studies showed us that our brain doesn’t like changes. We automate as much tasks as we can before our brain gets mature because our brain main task is to keep us alive. But do we know how much time it takes a brain to make a new habit an automatism ?
Let me tell you about a funny thing that happened to me a few years ago. We had a refrigerator with a water disposal in the door. We sold our refrigerator because we were moving out, therefore there was a empty space on my wall. Believe it or not, when we were not fully attentive and wanted a glass of cold water, we went to that empty space on the wall instead of going to the sink… It took us 3 weeks before we automatically got to the sink when we wanted a glass of water !
How long does it take to change an habit ? People say it takes 21 days to have a new habit but the fact is that the longer we do something, the longer it takes to change it.
